Check-in/Sharing

Topic/Activity:
Freud argues that God is an illusion that we needed to invent. Is there any evidence that God does exist? Do we need a God? To what extent does the belief in God support a sense that we are passive, merely puppets or victims?

Is there any thing that makes us believe, even in the face of these powerful rhetorical questions? If there is, what is it?

Closing Words:

In his memoir, Night, young Elie’s spiritual master, Moche, tells Elie that every question possesses a power that does not lie in its answer. He argues that “ Man raises himself toward God by the questions he asks Him.”

He adds that he cannot understand God’s answers to the questions. When Wiesel asks him why he cannot understand God’s answers, Moche replies: “ I pray to the God within me that He will give me strength to ask Him the right questions.”
