What Is Community Ministry?

Community Minister Rev. Cheryl R. Lloyd

The role of the affiliated community minister is to engage church members in projects that view the world through a different lens. As community minister, I have established a relationship with FUSN and other UU churches to conduct projects in the inner-city.

In the past, I worked with the UU ministry in Roxbury and the Channing Elementary School in Hyde Park. Presently, I am working with the Mather Elementary School in Dorchester and collaborating with FUSN, other UU churches, and the school.

“Last year was the first year that Cheryl Lloyd and her volunteers joined the Mather Community. The amount of love and generosity that the volunteers brought to our children was indescribable. Everywhere you looked, whether in the classroom, the hallways, or even in the office, there was an adult paired with a child (or children) in need.”

Emily Cox, Principal

Mather School

The Mather School is the oldest elementary school in North America and consists mostly of children from non-English-speaking families. Ninety-five percent of these children come from families with low incomes. Our goal at the Mather Elementary school is to provide tutors and encouragement to the students, support to hard-working but beleaguered teachers and administrators, and supply materials that range from snacks and mittens to books, pencils, and paper where they are deficient. We have also made it possible for each student to have a Mather School uniform.

Though the work we do, and the help we supply, are important, the real joy of community ministry is connection. What we learn, of course, is that “they” are us, and we are “them.”
